Theme: Ending Plastic Pollution

At Miniplast Ltd., World Environment Day, observed on June 5, is a moment of reflection, responsibility, and renewed commitment. It is a day that deeply aligns with our purpose as a Plastic Products Manufacturing Company with over 35 years of experience and six years in Recycling. We understand the critical need to create a more responsible and sustainable approach to plastic production and consumption, to protect our environment, empower communities, and drive circular innovation in West Africa and beyond.

The Plastic Pollution Challenge

The world generates over 430 million tons of plastic waste every year. Out of this figure,

-        50% ends up in landfills

-        Only 9% is recycled

-        22% is mismanaged, polluting oceans, rivers and communities

-        19% is incinerated

The consequences are far-reaching; hence, we cannot ignore the cost to health, biodiversity and climate.

Our Response: Circularity in Action

At Miniplast, we have embraced our role as a solution provider – converting plastic waste into opportunity, and shifting from a linear model of ‘take-make-dispose’ to a closed-loop circular economy.

-        We operate a fully integrated recycling and production facility, managing the entire lifecycle: from collection, sorting, washing, and pelletizing to the creation of new, high-quality plastic products.

-        Since 2021, we have retrieved over 60,000 tons of plastic waste from the environment contributing to the global agenda of reducing plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy.

-        We have generated over 2,000 direct jobs, with a focus on youth and women, currently 30% of our 1,700 green workforce are women.

-        With investment from Norfund, we have expanded our capacity to scale impact and innovation.

From Local Action to Regional Influence

Our commitment goes beyond operational excellence. We actively shape the policy and systems driving sustainability in Africa.

National Policy Input

We are proud to be active members of the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership (Ghana NPAP), where we contribute to defining the Critical Accelerators for Plastic Waste Management in Ghana. Our insight helped inform scalable actions that strengthen value chains, promote circular design, and empower informal workers.

Regional Policy Input

Miniplast was proud to provide private sector input during the ECOWAS-World Bank Regional Consultation Workshop on the West Africa Regional Action Plan on Plastic Waste Management and Circular Economy. Through this platform, we advocated for inclusive financing, private sector investment, and practical steps towards sustainable circular systems across the sub-region.

Capacity Strengthening for the Informal Sector

With support from the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) and the World Economic Forum, we implemented a Capacity Strengthening Program for the Informal Sector, focusing on Technical training, Entrepreneurship, and Gender Equity. This initiative reflects our belief that real change must include the often-overlooked individuals who are critical to Waste Management Systems.

Ongoing Green Initiatives

We are proud of the steps we have taken to embed sustainability into every facet of our operations.

Sustainable Sourcing

We prioritize recyclable raw materials and continuously invest in alternative solutions that maintain product quality while reducing environmental impact.

Waste Reduction & Efficiency

Our in-house recycling and lean production processes help minimize waste at all stages.

Community Engagement

Through Miniplast’s Go-Green Organization Projects, partnerships with over 50 organizations, and local circularity programs, we foster environmental education, create income-generating opportunities, and support grassroots change.

Vision for a Circular Economy

Our long-term goal is to produce goods that are reusable and recyclable ensuring that no plastic ends up as waste, and every material has a second life.

A Shared Responsibility

On this World Environment Day, we reiterate that solving plastic pollution is a collective journey. At Miniplast, we do not just speak about change, we live it.

We invite our employees, partners, customers, and community members to join us in taking bold steps.

-        Say no to single-use plastics

-        Support recycling and reuse initiatives

-        Choose sustainable products

-        Educate others and lead by example

Together, we can shape a future where industry and sustainability coexist, turning waste into value and positioning Africa at the forefront in ending plastic pollution.

Happy World Environment Day!

Beat Plastic Pollution – one plastic bottle recycled, one policy reformed, one partnership at a time.
